Officials Worry About Job Losses if Depot
Closes Down
( Air Date: 6/16/2004 )
The Newport Chemical Depot is just months away from beginning the breakdown
of the VX nerve agent stored there.
But what will that mean for our area?
The expected start date for the destruction of VX is the end of September
and should be complete in about two and a half years.
Currently, there are no plans for the Depot once the VX is destroyed.
But Vermillion County leaders hope the facility will continue to benefit
the community.
If the depot were to close, it will mean the loss of 600 jobs.
The Newport Chemical Depot is the second largest employer in Vermillion County,
after Eli Lilly.
