Chemical Weapons Disposal in Richmond

It’s still a long way away, but aging chemical weapons at Blue Grass Army Depot in Richmond may be disposed of sooner than expected.

The Pentagon is looking to destroy the 523 ton stockpile. The project was previously delayed.

The Pentagon has nearly doubled its 2010 budget request. That move comes after putting the project on “care taker” status for a few years, freezing funds. This slow down pushed the finish date back to 2023.

Now, citizen’s watchdog Craig Williams says the extra money could move the date up to 2020.

Two years ago, congress mandated that chemical weapons be destroyed by 2017.
