Officials at Newport Chemical Depot have concluded their preliminary investigation into the cause of a caustic wastewater leak.

Initial results conclude that improper installation or alignment of the gasket, or a material failure in the gasket of a connection located inside one of the reactors caused the October 29th spill.

Now, as a precautionary measure, all tool requirements and installation procedures will be reviewed.

Replacement of the gasket will take at least two weeks, and Newport officials promise the VX nuetralization process will continue only after the new gaskets have been installed and thoroughly tested.
