A snag in the neutralization of VX at the Newport Chemical Depot.

Depot leaders announced Wednesday that wastewater produced in the neutralization process is too flammable to transport.

A lab analysis of the hydrolysate, or wastewater byproduct during a planned break in operations found the problem.

Now, the Depot says they won't continue the neutralization process until the problem is fixed.

But they assure, in the meantime, the community is safe.

"There's no danger to the workers there on the installation and there's no hazard for the community either.  The wastewater we have produced is safely stored. It's grounded and it's in sealed containers," says Newport Chemical Depot Public Affairs Officer, Terry Arthur.

Arthur says a team of engineers is now looking at why the flammability of the wastewater is so high.

There is no timeline given as to when neutralization will begin again.
