Folks in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio send a message to the U.S. Army... "Do it right.. Keep it on site". A plea to keep neutralized VX in Newport, Indiana.. rather than ship it cross country... risking the health and safety of folks along the way. The citizens group "Chemical Weapons Working Group" spoke out in Indianapolis Thursday. It's the latest move to stop the move of neutralized VX. But, this is a different kind of protest. Already the states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio have said they don't want Indiana's neutralized nerve agent. But, this group is saying.. "we do". (Sara Morgan/Newport, IN) .."We are deeply concerned that the army continues to promote shipment of hydrolysate to Dupont in New Jersey"... Sara Morgan lives just three miles east of the Newport Chemical Depot in Vermillion County. She says she has total confidence in the army's operation in Newport and feels safe living near the depot... so why ship VX nerve agent hydrolysate off site? To support their cause, the group has presented the army with several letters.. including one from Vermillion County Sheriff Kim Hawkins who opposes the transportation of hydrolysate. The letter reads.. "I feel at this time that it is far too dangerous for any products of this type to be transported" And a letter by a Terre Haute union... pushing for more jobs. "The Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 157 has a highly skilled work force, ready and able to build any system necessary to meet the needs of the army" The army says transporting the wastewater for disposal would be quicker and cheaper. But, this group says don't compromise safety for schedule. (Elizabeth Crowe/Berea, KY) .."We don't want the perception of having to rush forward with something that dictates safety"... (Laura Rench/Dayton, OH) ..."If it takes people laying down on the road in front of those trucks it will happen. We feel so strongly about this"... The neutralization of VX at the Newport Chemical Depot should be complete next year.. leaving behind up to 4 million gallons of the wastewater. |
