More Opposition over Nerve Agent Disposal
April 6, 2006-
Activists in six states renew calls for the Army to drop its plans to ship
wastewater produced by the destruction of a deadly nerve agent to New Jersey
and instead dispose of the chemical waste in Indiana.
The criticism comes as they and the Army await a federal report expected
this month on DuPont's proposal to treat and dispose of the waste at its
Deepwater, New Jersey site.
During news conferences in Indianapolis and New Jersey today, the activists
predicted political presesure will doom the Army's plans. It wants
DuPont to dispose of the wastewater created by the destruction of the VX
nerve agent now stored in Indiana.
Since last May, an Army contractor has been destroying more than 250 thousand
gallons of VX, a project expected to produce about four million gallons of
hydrolysate.
The Army wants to truck that chemical to the Deepwater plant, whre it would
be treated and discharged into the Delaware River.
