The U.S. Army announced the team Friday that will assess whether chemical weapons can be transported from the Bluegrass Army Depot for disposal elsewhere.
The group includes top aides who'll make a recommendation to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
State Senator Ed Worley of Richmond is expressing anger over the potential loss of federal money to destroy the old weapons of mass destruction on site.
"It's almost mind-boggling to think that we could go to the other side of the world and fight a war to do away with the threat of chemical weapons, but right here at home, remove the funding to destroy them in our own hometown."
Worley appears on Kentucky Newsmakers Saturday morning at 11 on WKYT.
Kentucky U.S. Senators Mitch McConnell and Jim Bunning have also voiced opposition to the plan to take the weapons elsewhere.
Richmond and Madison County officials have vowed to fine anyone who attempts to transport the weapons. The Army promised Friday that however the weapons are destroyed, the safety of workers, communities and the environment will not be compromised.
