Aberdeen, MD (WJZ) The Army says
it has removed the last bulk chemical agent tanks from storage at Aberdeen
Proving Ground.
That ends one portion of a nationwide chemical weapons disposal project.
Under an international treaty, more than 1,600 tons of mustard gas agent
were sent to Aberdeen for disposal.
Wastewater from the project was shipped to a DuPont Company treatment plant
in New Jersey on the Delaware River.
The disposal project at the base began two years ago.
The Army accelerated plans to destroy the supply after the September 11th
terrorist attacks raised worries about an attack at the base.
