A national citizens group is advocating treatment of a VX by-product
here in Indiana, on the same site where the deadly chemical agent is being
destroyed.
The chemical weapons working group made a proposal Thursday to the U. S.
Army regarding disposal of VX hydrolysate, a caustic drano-like substance.
The plan recommends the army construct and operate a super-critical water
oxidation facility to treat the by-product at the Newport facility, as originally
planned and approved by citizens and the state. Second, it suggests the
army transport the water oxidation units to Kentucky to destroy chemical
agent hydrolysates there.
The group says the proposal would save taxpayer money and be environmentally
safe.
