Army contractors in Newport are expected to begin a test Wednesday of procedures used in the neutralization of deadly VX nerve agent. If successful, the army could begin full neutralization operations for the 12-hundred ton stockpile there in September.

Meanwhile, plans to send the resulting wastewater to a Dupont plant on the New Jersey side of the Delaware River are still being debated. Environmentalists in Delaware fear some potentially toxic compounds could escape into the Delaware River.  New Jersey authorities say Dupont would need new permits.

If the plan to send the waste to Dupont falls through, it's possible it could be stored in tanks at the site in Indiana.
