Western Indiana Officials Oppose Shipment of VX Waste

Officials in Vermillion County say they don't want the Army to transport caustic waste from the destruction of a deadly nerve agent through their community.

County commissioners Monday passed a resolution opposing shipment of hydrolysate, the chemical byproduct that will be generated by destruction of VX nerve agent stored at the Army's Newport chemical depot.

The council in Fairview Park, about 12 miles south of the depot, recently passed a similar resolution. The Army plans to ship the waste to a Dupont facility in Deepwater, New Jersey, where it would treated again and dumped into the Delaware River.

Some experts have concerns that the VX could be reconstituted back into its deadly form even after it has been treated. A recent I-Team 8 investigation, Project Security, outlined those concerns, along with worries about security and storage of the VX at Newport.

The governors of New Jersey and Delaware have asked the Army to reconsider the plan. Vermillion county officials say they realize their resolution isn't likely to deter the shipment.
