Citizens groups from half a dozen states including Indiana are joining forces
to keep caustic wastewater from the Newport Army Depot in the Hoosier
state.
On Thursday news conferences were held in Indiana and New Jersey in a
show of support for treating the deadly VX nerve agent byproduct on site
and not having it trucked all the way to the east coast.
The US Army has said it plans to ship hydrolysate to a Dupont facility
in New Jersey. Those who oppose the plan fear what will happen. "If it takes people laying down on the road in front of those trucks it
will happen. We feel that strongly about this," said Laura Rench, Citizens
for the Responsible Destruction of Chemical Weapons. Right now the VX is being neutralized at the depot in Vermillion County.
The Army says it will wait for the final report by the Centers for Disease
Control before making a final decision on disposing the byproduct.
