Army Says Newport VX Is Secure

(Newport - January 24, 2005) Nearly 20 gallons of chemical agent recovered from the Newport Chemical Depot has been secured.

The Depot's commander says the recovered liquid was contained in a sealed, small, metal tank that was part of the munitions filling process during the manufacture of the agent.

That tank was recovered in an ongoing dismantle operation to the former VX production facility.

Officials insist the area has always been secure, and say their highly trained staff will work to ensure the safety of the environment and the public.
