Anniston: Groups Protest Weapons Incinerator
6/23/03
The Anniston Army Depot is waiting for word to begin destroying weapons. Army officials have told the government the facility is ready. Governor Bob Riley and Senator Richard Shelby must first approve the move.
Not everyone agrees Anniston is prepared, though. Protestors spoke out Saturday, urging the government to stop and think the matter through. They say the work is too dangerous, and worry about the area being contaminated. The group says neutralizing the chemical weapons would be safer than destroying them.
One protestor challenged Governor Riley and President Bush to think about personal safety.
"Governor Bob Riley, how dare you sign off on this before all the maximum protection is in place, which can happen before October at the earliest. President George Bush, you could stop this tomorrow," said Clay Gresham.
Calhoun County has provided protective hoods, air filters,
and shelter kits for residents. If Governor Riley signs off on
the deal, the incinerator could start destroying weapons in the
next few months. These include more than 2,200 tons of Cold War-era
weapons, including blister and nerve agents.
