Chemical-weapons disposal draws lawsuit
The Army's plans to burn chemical weapons at incinerators in
four cities will release dangerous pollutants into the air, including
lead, mercury and arsenic, according to a federal lawsuit. A
coalition of environmental gourps says the Army failed to fuilly
consider other disposal methods, in violation of the National
Environmental Policy Act. The groups want to block burns in Anniston,
Ala; Pine Bluff, Ark; Umatilla, Ore; and Tooele, Utah. Greg Mahall
ofthe Army's Chemical Materials Agency, said the Army is "quite
confident that the incienration technology is safe."
