Army redevelops Web site on weapons destruction

The Army has redeveloped its Web site about efforts to safely store and eliminate its aging chemical weapon stockpiles.

The Web site, www.cma.army.mil, is a resource for individuals and organizations searching for information about chemical weapons destruction at Newport, where 1,269 tons of the deadly nerve agent VX is awaiting neutralization. The site also contains information about five other locations in the United States where Cold War weapons are stockpiled, according to an Army Chemical Materials Agency news release.

"The Web site's new offerings aim to inform and educate the public about CMA's mission areas -- destruction, storage, emergency preparedness and support to national defense," the news release reads. "A calendar of events is one of the new online resources, which plugs the public into activities happening nationwide, including public meetings at the stockpile sites."

The Army Materials Agency is responsible for safely storing and eliminating the United States' aging chemical weapons and agent stockpiles and for the safe elimination of recovered chemical material.
