Rep. Grubb's VX destruction bill heads to governor

The Indiana House passed the negotiated version of state Rep. Dale Grubb's VX destruction and transportation legislation last week.

The representatives voted 86-0 and it will now be sent to the governor, according to a news release.

House Bill 1059 includes three provisions that will make the exact location and status of the toxic material and its transportation a more detailed and safer process.

The legislation states that facilities generating hazardous waste must be able to demonstrate that the waste will be destroyed or treated to the point of no longer being toxic.

If any materials are transported, they must have a transportation risk analysis document filed with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, Indiana State Police and the State Emergency Management Agency prior to the move.

"Hoosier safety and protection must remain the top priority as we move through the destruction process and handling of the secondary waste," said Grubb, D-Covington. "This bill continues our vigilance."
