Weapons destruction resumes
STOCKTON -- The plant burning part of the nation's supply of chemical weapons
in Utah's west desert restarted operations Thursday after a monthlong closure
for maintenance.
The facility, located at the Deseret Chemical Depot, also began destroying
155mm shells and bulk containers containing the nerve agent VX.
The destruction of all VX munitions and stores is expected to be completed
in about a year.
After that, the plant will enter the final phase of the weapons destruction
program involving mustard gas.
So far, about 45 percent of chemical agents and 82 percent of the munitions
stored at the facility have been destroyed.
