Tooele liquid
incinerator restarted after July shutdown
Workers at the Tooele Chemical
Agent Disposal Facility this week restarted a liquid incinerator, which has
been shut down since July 20.
Officials stopped processing operations
in Liquid Incinerator 1 on July 17 after monitors detected an interferent,
a substance that exhibited an electronic pattern similar to the deadly VX
nerve agent.
Plant systems contractor
EG&G
Defense Materials Inc., the U.S. Army and Utah regulatory representatives
made the joint decision to restart the furnace after EG&G officials confirmed
that the interferent originated
in the incinerator.
The source was identified as an electrical cord and maintenance light, which
had been inadvertently left within a duct following recent maintenance work.
