Decommissioning plant to process remaining chemicals |
SARATOV, December 20 (RIA Novosti, Erik Batuyev) - A chemical weapons decommissioning facility in southern Russia will process its last batch of toxic substances on December 23, the plant's press center said Tuesday.
"Over the three years of its operations, the plant has processed more than 1,000 tons of hazardous substances, such as mustard gas, lewisite and their compounds," the source said.
The facility, situated in the central Russian region of Saratov, has been provided with advanced decommissioning technologies and has had its safety checked by an international group of inspectors.
Once all the chemicals have been destroyed, the facility will be converted to process toxic substances left over after the disposal of chemical weapons.
