The
Senate passed the 2007 Military Construction, Military Quality of Life
and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act today which included $140
million for construction of two chemical weapons disposal facilities,
one in Kentucky and one in Colorado.
The original request was for $130
million, but KY Sen. Mitch McConnell submitted an amendment to add an
additional $10 million for these projects. McConnell's amendment was
passed as part of the bill today in spite of total Construction
Appropriation being $435.7 million below the Bush administration's
request.
The bill must now pass the House
before going to the President to be signed into law. It is expected to
pass by a wide majority, as differences between the House and Senate
versions were ironed out before the election break.
"We're pleased the increase for
chemical weapons disposal held," said Craig Williams, Director of the
Chemical Weapons Working Group (CWWG). "Every dollar counts now that
preliminary construction activities have begun."
If adequate funding continues to be
provided, construction is scheduled to be completed in 2011 at the
Kentucky site, and 2010 in Colorado.
"The citizens are watching the
funding levels very carefully," said Williams, "and they are extremely
appreciative of Sen. McConnell's efforts to ensure this project
continues to move forward."
