The Kentucky Environmental Quality Commission, a seven-member
citizen board that advises the Governor on environmental matters,
selected the Chemical Weapons Working Group (CWWG) to receive
its 2003 Earth Day Award at the Governor's Mansion in Frankfort
today.
The Working Group was selected "for its efforts to research
and demonstrate alternatives technologies to incineration for
the destruction of nerve agents stored at the Blue Grass Army
Depot" in Richmond, Kentucky.
Each year the Environmental Quality Commission honors about a dozen organizations and individuals for their outstanding commitment to the environment. Others selected this year include Berea College President , Dr. Larry Shinn for his strong commitment to sustainable living and the creation and development of the Berea College Ecovillage.
CWWG Director, Craig Williams accepted today's award, "on behalf of the thousands of people who have worked with us to ensure that the chemical weapons stored here are disposed of in the safest and most environmentally protective manner possible."
The Chemical Weapons Working Group is an international coalition of groups from across the Pacific, the U.S. and Russia who have these weapons stored in their communities and are working to make sure they are destroyed in accordance with the Chemical Weapons Treaty while ensuring that public safety and environmental protection are the number one priority.
"Unfortunately the Army still plans to incinerate these weapons in several communities across the U.S.," said Williams. " The CWWG will continue to work at all these sites until the same safe options are provided for all communities"
The contract for neutralizing the chemicals stored in Kentucky is scheduled to be awarded in June of this year.
