NEW DEPUTY ASSISTANT TO THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE FOR CHEMICAL DEMILITARIZATION APPOINTED

Citizens Group Calls New Appointee "A Straight Shooter"

A former member of the professional staff for the House Armed Services Committee, Mr. Jean D. Reed, has been appointed as the new Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Chemical Demilitarization and Threat Reduction.

Mr. Reed permanently replaces Mr. Patrick Wakefield who was placed on administrative leave in August of last year. Until Mr. Reed's appointment, the position had been temporarily filled by Mr. Douglas M. Englund.

Prior to working for the House Armed Services Committee Mr. Reed served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1990, retiring as a Colonel. While on active duty, he served as Commander of the Army Research and Development Laboratory; Assistant Director for Weapons Technology at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and Senior Research Fellow at the National Defense University. He holds a master's degree in physics from Georgetown University and a bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma.

Mr. Reed brings to his appointment a thorough knowledge of the U.S. Chemical Demilitarization program, having served as the lead staff person for the House Armed Services Committee on this issue for more than a decade. This experience should serve him well in his newly-acquired and onerous task of overseeing all chemical weapons disposal projects nationwide.  He is now also responsible for issues associated with the Chemical Weapons Convention Treaty.

For the Chemical Weapons Working Group, Mr. Reed's appointment is a welcome change. Director Craig Williams, said, "Mr. Reed is a straight shooter. He has always taken the time to hear citizens' concerns and meet with local community representatives. He may not always agree with our position, but we always know exactly where he stands. That's a giant step in the right direction."
