We read about how Mr. Ross Vincent, the godfather of and spokesperson for some environmentalists, has agreed to the power plant and he leaves us to believe that the entire deal is a win-win for all involved. I am confused by this fact. Is not this Mr. Vincent the person who led the opposition to the incineration facility intended to dispose of weapons of mass destruction? Mustard agent, a mixture of sulfur and ethylene glycol (basically known as antifreeze), was to be disposed of by incineration.
Large stacks of reports were generated that showed the smokestack discharge would not damage the environment, that the technology is a tried and true method of disposal. The threat was implied that if the process of incineration moved forward lawsuits would follow.
Many people, including myself, were in total support of the incineration method. This substantial force was overshadowed by a very small number of people who could not show that the process of incineration was a bad thing, they were just opposed to to the process and wanted to use bacteria to destroy the mustard agent. A method that left behind sulfur, a hazardous waste product that would have to go into a landfill. A process that is vague and untried.
