Mustard agent leak reported

Officials at the Pueblo Chemical Depot reported Wednesday they had detected a mustard agent leak in one of the igloos.

The depot stores 780,000 artillery and mortar rounds containing 2,611 tons of mustard agent.

Leaking rounds previously had been found in the same igloo, and have been placed in metal containers.

The leak was discovered through air monitoring.

The chemical operations crew placed a charcoal filter on the rear vent of the igloo to remove mustard vapor from the air in the igloo. The storage structure doors were never opened but air monitoring of the igloo will continue.

Depot officials said no mustard agent was released to the atmosphere and no employees were exposed.
