Mustard gas moved for disposal

02/18/2005

The Army has removed the last bulk chemical agent tanks from storage at Aberdeen Proving Ground, wrapping up one portion of a nationwide disposal project, officials reported Thursday. Under an international treaty, more than 1,600 tons of mustard gas agent were sent to Aberdeen for disposal, with wastewater from the project shipped to the DuPont Co. treatment plant in Deepwater, N.J., near the foot of the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

Federal officials plan a meeting Monday to review accelerating the disposal of other chemical weapons stores and stockpiles around the country.
