Protesters Rally In Opposition To Incinerator; Incinerator Began
Destroying Weapons Last Week
POSTED: 4:20 p.m. CDT August 16, 2003
ANNISTON, Ala. -- The fires burning inside the Anniston Army Depot are fueling
heated opposition.
Saturday, people opposed to the U.S. Army's decision to start chemical weapons
incineration took to the streets to voice their concerns. Civil rights leaders
and Anniston residents joined in the march. Many say the Army has not taken
all the necessary precautions to protect people living near the incinerator.
"This is absolutely crazy," said protester Rufus Kinney. "It is illegal.
It should not be happening, and we want to call public attention to it."
Rockets that have been stored at the depot for 30 years were finally destroyed
last weekend. Army officials would not say if any rockets are being burned
this weekend.
The incinerator was shut down four times this week so workers could make
adjustments to the equipment.
