Congressman John Salazar says moving mustard gas from the Pueblo Chemical
Depot would be dangerous.
The military is considering moving the gas to the Pine Bluff Arsenal in
Arkansas for disposal. The Army had planned to neutralize the weapons on
site but is looking for cheaper alternatives.
Salazar says taxpayers are spending about $15-million a year to store the
weapons in Pueblo, with the expectation that a plant will be built to destroy
them there.
Construction is expected to create about 1,000 jobs.
One other chemical weapons site in Richmond, Kentucky doesn't have a disposal
system.
Last week the Army was ordered to study whether hauling the chemical weapons
to other sites would be worth the risks.
