DESTRUCTION OF CHEMICAL MUNITIONS

Dec 15, 2004

The United States is moving forward on its commitment to destroy thousands of chemical munitions with the help from engineers, scientists and technicians at the INEEL.

Earlier this year, the U-S Army's Pine Bluff arsenal in Arkansas began assessing and characterizing chemical munitions stored there.

The INEEL designed and fabricated the 'Munitions Assessment System' to do the job safely.

It is a one-of-a-kind system that can determine what is inside each weapon in a safe, enclosed environment.

Because of the variety of chemical material, the technicians must confirm the contents of the drums and individual munitions before the government chooses the best way of disposal.
