Pueblo's mustard gas supply center of discussion on Capitol Hill

The timetable for destruction of chemical weapons at the Pueblo Depot was front and center before the senate appropriations committee on Thursday.

Colorado Senator Wayne Allard questioned Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, about delays in the chemical destruction program, scheduled to be completed by 2012.

The destruction process is now on hold at the depot, and there is no funding allocated for the 2005-2006 fiscal year, Rice said that compliance was critical, despite setbacks in timing and funding, "If the United States of America is not complying with its obligations it's hard to force anyone else to comply. We have been very much a country of laws that insisted on our own compliance so we want to keep that record."

The Pentagon is now reviewing the destruction process, to determine if the process will remain in Pueblo or be moved to another site.
