Pine Bluff Arsenal Begins Liquid Incineration of Sarin nerve Agent

White Hall - The Pine Bluff Arsenal has begun destroying the sarin nerve agent that was contained in hundreds of rockets it began destroying last month. The Army Chemical Materials Agency has destroyed 958 rockets that contained the deadly chemical since incineration began March 29.

But before the metal rockets were destroyed in a deactivation furnace, the agent inside was drained through three holes and held in a tank until there was enough agent to burn in a separate liquid incinerator. Arsenal spokeswoman Raini Wright said Tuesday that the holding tank contained several hundred gallons Monday.

The liquid incinerator runs continuously on natural gas and needs a certain amount of agent to stay activated. Wright said the arsenal would release a total number of gallons of agent destroyed next week.

Meanwhile, 490 rockets -- more than half of all those destroyed in the last three weeks -- have been incinerated so far this week, after a slower-than-planned start to the process.
