But before the metal rockets were destroyed in a deactivation furnace, the agent inside was drained through three holes and held in a tank until there was enough agent to burn in a separate liquid incinerator. Arsenal spokeswoman Raini Wright said Tuesday that the holding tank contained several hundred gallons Monday. The liquid incinerator runs continuously on natural gas and needs a certain amount of agent to stay activated. Wright said the arsenal would release a total number of gallons of agent destroyed next week. Meanwhile, 490 rockets -- more than half of all those destroyed in the last three weeks -- have been incinerated so far this week, after a slower-than-planned start to the process. |
