NIZHNY NOVGOROD, May26 (Itar-Tass)
- Head of the Russian Munitions Agency Viktor Kholstov is holding on Thursday
a meeting on issues related to the completion of the construction of a
chemical weapons disposal facility. The meeting is held in Kambarka (Udmurtia
republic). The Kambarka facility is one of five arsenals in the territory of the Volga federal district where 6,400 tonnes of lewisite are stored. It is planned to complete the construction of the facility’s industrial zone and social infrastructure by the end of 2005 and from 2006 to begin the disposal of this weapon of mass destruction. All lewisite stockpiles should be eliminated in Kambarka in 3.5 years, deputy head of the conventional problems department of the Udmurt government Valery Malyshev told Itar-Tass. According to the official, the limit of financing for the whole construction is 935 million roubles. The funds are disbursed on schedule and even slightly in advance that makes it possible to carry out the construction work without interruption. “Almost the entire industrial zone of the facility is located 1.5 kilometres from the town, therefore all the required safety measures are being taken in the construction and advanced technologies used,” Malyshev said. “All the above ground buildings of the facility are covered with the “sandwich-type” protective domes made of metal and 1.5-metre wide fire-proof insulant in order to prevent the discharge of lewisite fumes into the atmosphere in case of contingency,” the official said. At present 39.4 kilometres of gas pipeline from Perm to Kambarka have been laid, four houses for the facility personnel built, as well as buildings and warehouses of the technological complex, the medical diagnostic centre building, a laboratory and hotel for international inspectors constructed. |
