Army is seeking permit for neutralized waste

February 18, 2004

Newport -- The Army wants to change an environmental permit to allow some of the waste from neutralizing the Newport Chemical Depot's stockpile of the deadly VX nerve agent to be handled at a warehouse there.

The Army wants the change so that contractors can store materials used in the neutralization process in a warehouse currently approved for the depot to use in storing hazardous waste.

Scott Rowden, an environmental manager for the contractor, said the permit change would "basically be a change of operators" transferring the building from the depot to the Disposal Facility.
