Williams honored for fight on weapons disposal

Craig Williams, director of the Chemical Weapons Working
Group, has won a national award from the coalition of state
Public Interest Research Groups. The coalition credited
Williams' group with helping to pass legislation that forced the
Army to adopt safer means of chemical weapons disposal,
spearheading the campaign to restructure the Army's chem ical
demilitarization program, and keeping incineration projects
out of several communities.

Chemical neutralization will be used to destroy the stockpile of
nerve agent at the Blue Grass Army Depot. Williams will receive
the John O'Connor Citizen Achievement Award on Thursday in
Denver. The award is named for an activist who worked with PIRGs
to win passage of federal Superfund laws.
