Nerve agent moved to safer containers at Army Depot

Herald-Leader Staff Writer

About 100 gallons of deadly GB nerve agent stored at the Blue Grass Army Depot in Richmond were successfully transferred to new, safer containers in a several-day operation that ended Tuesday, officials said.

The agent had been stored in a large container since 1984. When workers tried to replace a plug on the container last month, they learned it was eroding from the inside.

The plug replacement was stopped so the agent could be transferred to two new containers. The transfer took several days because of built-in delays for safety checks, spokesman Richard Sloan said. He said there was no release of agent into the air.
