Workers trying to replace plugs on a container containing bulk nerve agent
at the Blue Grass Army Depot stopped Tuesday when one of the plugs didn't
seal correctly, officials said.
The container, which holds 170 gallons of GB nerve agent, was temporarily
sealed and moved back into a storage igloo. No agent was detected outside
the protective area set up around the container, officials said.
Craig Williams of the Chemical Weapons Working Group, who has often been
critical of the Army's handling of nerve agents, said he wasn't aware of
Tuesday's problems, but had been assured ample safety precautions would be
in place as the plugs were changed.
Stacy Floden, spokeswoman for the state Division of Emergency Mangement,
characterized the incident as "no big deal."
