Funds OK'd for
weapons disposal
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-KY, announced yesterday that the Senate has
approved a provision he added to the supplemental appropriations bill that
will pay for the Iraq war.
McConnell's measure blocks the Defartment of Defense from redirecting funds
appropriated for the disposal of chemical weapons at the Blue Grass Army
and Pueblo Chemical depots to other facilities. It also requires the
department to spend at least $100 million at the two sites within four months
of enactment and provide Congress with a bi-monthly accounting of the monies.
McConnell's measure was included only in the Senate version of the supplemental
appropriations bill. The bill now moves to a House/Senate conference
committee, where the differences will be worked out.
