DEPOT WEAPONS MONEY OBLIGATED

The Pentagon is properly obligating money for chemical weapons destruction at Blue Grass Army Depot and its sister plant in Colorado, the General Accounting Office said yesterday.

The GAO, the investigative arm of Congress, said in a letter to U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell that the Pentagon obligated $103 million for chemical weapons destruction between May and September of last year and had released previously impounded funds.

Last year, McConnell, R-Ky., and other critics accused the Pentagon of delaying construction of chemical demilitarization plants in Madison County and Pueblo, Colo., by holding up money appropriated by Congress. The Pentagon agreed to release the funds last April, and McConnell asked the GAO to make sure it did so.
