DEPOT WASTE MEETING THURSDAY

Blue Grass Army Depot officials and community leaders will meet Thursday to discuss two new reports about proposals to transport waste products from the chemical weapons destruction process. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Eastern Kentucky University's Carl D. Perkins Building on Kit Carson Drive in Richmond, Rooms C and D. The Army has argued that shipping the material, called hydrolysates, away from the depot could save money. But citizens' groups and some elected officials oppose the idea, citing, among other things, environmental concerns. Representatives of the Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives program, which will oversee destruction of the depot's chemical weapons, and a private contractor, Mitretek Systems, will provide briefings on off-site shipment. There will be public-comment periods throughout the meeting.
