DEQ open house hearing set for Wednesday night

By the East Oregonian

HERMISTON — The Oregon Department of Environ- mental Quality has scheduled an open house, presentation and public hearing beginning at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in conference room No. 5 at the Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston.

The open house/presentation portion of the meeting will provide additional information about the draft post-trial burn risk assessment work plan prepared by the agency for the Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility near Hermiston.

A public hearing, beginning at 7:30 p.m., will offer an opportunity for public comment on the workplan.

The DEQ conducted a pre-trial risk assessment in 1997 and had originally planned to prepare addendums to that assessment after the facility started operating. However, because of the availability of additional weather data and improved air dispersion models as well as revised risk assessment guidance documents published by the United States Environmental Protection Agency the DEQ deemed it was necessary to conduct another risk assessment.

Written comments are due by 5 p.m., Monday, Dec. 1. For more information about the risk assessment workplan please call Sue Oliver of the DEQ's Hermiston office at 567-8297, ext. 26.
