Crew detects trace of sarin vapor in igloo

By the East Oregonian

HERMISTON — A monitoring crew detected a trace amount of sarin chemical agent vapor Wednesday inside an igloo storing 155 mm projectiles.

The trace agent was discovered during routine monitoring. The trace amount was so low it posed no danger to people or the environment. But the igloo also has a passive filter system that prevents chemical agent vapor from escaping outside the structure.

However, as a further protective measure, a powered filter system was installed.

Although there was no danger, depot officials notify the public when such incidents occur.

They also notify off-post emergency operations centers in Umatilla and Morrow counties, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.
