| Mustard gas leaks in Tooele
DESERET CHEMICAL DEPOT, Tooele County — Mustard gas leaking from an aging 155 mm cannon shell was detected Wednesday during routine monitoring operations in a storage igloo here. Workers in protective clothing put the munition in a larger airtight container for continued storage until it can be destroyed. The projectile had been placed inside a container earlier because it was leaking. For an unknown reason, the container it was in leaked, depot spokeswoman Alaine Southworth said. No vapor escaped into the environment and there was no danger to surrounding communities, she said. Southworth said two other so-called "overpacked" containers were found leaking last month and no vapor escaped the storage igloo. |
