Optimist Club hears from
Newport plant commander
The Clinton Breakfast Optimists met this morning at L&L Castle with 24
present. Guest speaker was Scott Kimmell, commander of the Newport facility.
Kimmell told Optismists that approximately 10 percent of the VX has been
destroyed, which is actually a little bit ahead of schedule.
Everything seems to be going according to the plan to ship the product
to New Jersey because they have the best wastewater treatment facility in
the country, Kimmell said. The TVA is destroying the former production
facility and is at least one year ahead of schedule. Kimmell said' Safety
First" is their number one concern, both for them and the community.
The Newport Depot will host the Chemical Leadership Conference this year
for three days. Kimmell said their mission should be com-plete by the first
or second quarter of 2008.
The Optimist Scholarship com-mittee will meet after the regular meeting on
March 17th. There are 24 applications to consider. April 11 is Career Day.
Optimists are look-ing for speakers to participate in the event. The club
is also beginning plans for the Clothe-A-Child Golf outing for sometime in
June.
The monthly board meeting will be held tomorrow morning, March 10th,
at 6:45 a.m. in the WCCHH board room. Optimists will meet again next Thursday
morning at 7 a.m. at the Castle
