Bill would require GAO to review VX nerve agent plan
CARNEYS POINT -- The House of Representatives is expected to pass a bill
today that will require an independent review of the plan to discharge wastewater
from the destruction of VX nerve agent to the Delaware River, three South
Jersey congressmen announced this morning.
Language in the Defense Department's authorization bill will require
the Government Accountability Office to conduct a review of disposal plan
and report by the end of the year. The Army will be prohibited from actually
shipping any wastewater from its chemical weapons disposal site in Indiana
until at least February 2007.
U.S. Reps. Rob Andrews, D-Haddon Heights, Frank A. LoBiondo, R-Ventnor,
and Jim Saxton, R-Mount Holly, made the announcement this morning in a teleconference
with reporters.
