The Army Chemical Materials Agency at Aberdeen Proving Ground has named Kevin P. Duvall, acting director of the agency's Cooperative Threat Reduction Support Directorate, to lead a team that will work on ways to meet the April 2012 Chemical Weapons Convention deadline for destroying the U.S. chemical agent stockpile, the Army announced last week.
As of Jan. 12, CMA operations had resulted in nearly 11,000 tons of chemical agent destroyed, or about 34 percent of the originally declared U.S. stockpile, the Army said.
The Army stores chemical weapons at eight sites: Aberdeen Proving Ground; Tooele, Utah; Anniston, Ala.; Umatilla, Ore.; Pine Bluff, Ark.; Newport, Ind.; Richmond, Ky.; and Pueblo, Colo. Disposal facilities operate in Utah, Alabama, Oregon and Maryland. Disposal facilities are expected to open in Indiana and Arkansas later this year, according to the Army.
According to a statement earlier this month, the Aberdeen Chemical Agent Disposal Facility had destroyed more than 87 percent of the mustard agent stockpile that has been stored at APG for more than 60 years. The facility remains on schedule to complete stockpile destruction this winter, according to the Army.
