DOWNE TWP. -- DuPont and the U.S. Army will make a return visit to Downe Township on Sept. 20 to repeat their presentation on the proposal for disposal of effluent from the treatment of VX nerve gas in the Delaware River.

Many residents had expressed concern that they missed a previous presentation because there was no notification that it was to be given. Mayor Harry Wilson had said that notification came too late to advertise it for the July township committee meeting.

Local residents asked for a repeat performance so more people could hear the presentation and it was arranged.

Bernadette Donohue said she is continuing to campaign against the disposal of effluent into the Delaware River and ultimately Delaware Bay. She said she is investigating the feasibility of having stickers and signs made opposing the disposal.

Although the Centers for Disease Control has deemed the project safe, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection still must issue a permit and there has been widespread opposition, especially by watermen who make their living from the bay and bayshore communities.
