Special to The Star
| I am truly proud of what this group of employees, their family, friends and neighbors, has accomplished since Aug. 9, 2003. During that time, workers have made this community safer by destroying 42,762 GB rockets and warheads. They accomplished this milestone while compiling the best safety record in the Army’s Chemical Demilitarization Program. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, ANCDF’s safety performance, which includes more than 6.2 million hours worked without an employee being injured bad enough that they had to stay home, makes the plant one of the safest in the nation or the world. Of course, we could not carry out our important mission without the support of our elected leaders, the business community and public. Thank you, because without your support our jobs would be much more difficult. About a year from now, we expect the last of the GB weapons will be destroyed. When that is accomplished, the risk to our community will be reduced even more. As was our commitment from the beginning, we will continue to perform our jobs with your safety in mind. Our goal is to protect the workforce first, which in turn ensures your safety. Once again, thanks for your support as we continue to make this community a safer place to live and work. During this holiday season as you share season’s greetings, I would also ask that if you know of someone who works at ANCDF, please shake their hands and thank them for a job well done. This is truly the most talented team of men and women I have ever worked with. They, along with the workforce at the Anniston Chemical Activity who ensures the safe and secure storage of the chemical weapons, are true heroes. Timothy K. Garrett is project manager of the ANCDF site. |
