Anniston passed a milestone in chemical weapons processing earlier this month, then stopped for maintenance.

The Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility destroyed its 100,000th chemical weapon, with about 700,000 left to go.

The ANCDF destroyed 2,805 sarin-filled 105-mm shells and 329 gallons of agent between Nov. 9 and Nov. 17 – bringing the destruction total to 100,750 sarin-filled weapons and 85,831 gallons of agent. Work stopped for most of last week to perform maintenance on the deactivation furnace and heated-discharge conveyor.

The Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility destroyed 30 sarin-filled bombs between Nov. 10 and Wednesday. The facility also destroyed four GB ton containers during the period, and resumed rocket-processing Thursday.

Umatilla has destroyed 38,890 sarin-filled weapons and 434,877 pounds of sarin.

Other facilities did not process weapons this week. Disposal at the Pine Bluff Chemical Agent Disposal Facility stopped on Nov. 12 after a small fire broke out in its explosive containment room. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Newport Chemical Agent Disposal Facility in Newport, Ind., did not destroy any bulk VX this week; workers installed new valves on equipment after a spill of caustic wastewater late last month.

The Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility in Tooele, Utah, is retooling to begin destroying blister agent next year.
