Ramping up

In our opinion
10-20-2003

After several weeks of measured steps, self-restricted movements and no serious difficulties, the chemical weapons incineration project at the Anniston Army Depot is ramping up to a fuller speed.

The important thing for residents of northeast Alabama to realize is that this means the deadly chemical agent stored in the Depot’s igloos will be destroyed that must faster, and the shadow over this community will be lifted that much sooner.

Coincidentally, in what should be looked upon as further encouragement to speed things up, the independent National Research Council issued a report this week that said the Army should prove its capability of destroying gelled rockets at a higher rate than ever before.

The NRC report backs up what this page has long championed, that we should move to diminish this threat as soon as is safely and efficiently possible. Meanwhile, we have reason to feel good about the progress made thus far, with so few mishaps.
