Chemical weapons destruction resumes here after maintenance

After prolonged maintenance this week, the Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility resumed the destruction of sarin-filled 105-mm shells.

Crews destroyed 292 shells between Sept. 9 and Wednesday. The facility has destroyed 76,043 munitions and 712,125 pounds of sarin.

The Pine Bluff Chemical Agent Disposal Facility in Pine Bluff, Ark., destroyed 764 sarin-filled rockets and 13,751 pounds of nerve agent between Sept. 6 and Monday. The facility has destroyed 17,043 rockets and 161,787 pounds of agent.

The Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility in Umatilla, Ore., destroyed 3,371 pounds of sarin between Sept. 8 and Wednesday. The facility did not destroy any rockets, due to a scheduled round of maintenance. Umatilla has destroyed 31,098 rockets and 329,291 pounds of chemical agent since beginning operations in September, 2004.

The Newport Chemical Agent Disposal Facility in Newport, Ind., announced Wednesday that it had reduced the flammability of wastewater created by its VX disposal process. The resumption of VX processing was expected to resume last week.

The Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility in Tooele, Utah, is undergoing a period of retooling to begin the destruction of bulk blister agent. Weapons disposal is expected to resume in the spring.
